Hello, friends! As confirmed cases of Coronavirus surge in the US, there are innumerable healthcare workers on the front lines right now that are completely slammed while dealing with a flood of patients requiring hospitalization and special attention. Many of them are too busy to go get food, let alone go grocery shopping and prepare meals at home. On the other hand, restaurants across the city are struggling with lost business, with Asian restaurants being hit especially hard .
Let's #FeedTheFrontLine! You get to support a local restaurant, and healthcare workers get a free, delicious hot meal (and a change of pace from cafeteria food)!
We're raising money to buy a huge batch of boxed meals from a local restaurant and then deliver those meals free of charge to a hospital in SF (we've spoken to UCSF and SF General so far). Ideally, we could do this on an ongoing basis as long as this crisis continues.
We made our first delivery on Sunday, March 29th to SF General's Emergency Department. Things have been changing day to day, and they had approximately 100 staff at the ED that evening. Little Star made the meals, and we fed 100 people for just over $1k!
We've also been working with the COVID Clinicial Meal Support Program and will coordinating with them so that we don't overlap deliveries and ensure that the hospitals aren't given too much excess to avoid food waste.
If we estimate $10-15/meal, then $3,000 could provide 200 - 300 meals. Depending on the hospital, there are usually 50 - 100 staff in the emergency department at any given time. $3k would cover 2 - 6 weeks of delivery, depending on how many people are needing a meal for a specific delivery.
We are asking for your help to raise as much money as possible (starting with $3k to do 2 - 6 deliveries) so we can deliver large batches of boxed meals to hospitals around the city. If we can raise more, even better! We'd be happy to continue doing this as long as it's safe and we're healthy enough to do so.
Love,
Pav, Ali, and Friends
Additional Notes:
- We're talking to HCWs and restaurants right now, so some of the specifics here may be subject to change as we learn more about how to best be helpful. This could mean cost of meals, number of deliveries, number of meals per delivery, number of hospitals, etc.
- We want to do this weekly for as long as possible, as long as we can continue to raise funds.
- We're opting to deliver it ourselves to spare the restaurants of any commission / fees from Grubhub/etc during this financially crunched time.
- Ali & I will be wearing masks and have gloves that we'll wear then entire time we're receiving the delivery, handling the food, and delivering it to the hospital.
- We'll start small & local -- 1 restaurant & hospital/week, but if we're able to raise enough we can bump that up.
Accountability
- Dates of delivery are subject to change based on restaurant availability and who we can get in touch with at SF hospitals.
- We're covering all gas & expenses. The $$ will only go to the cost of the meals.
- We'll keep receipts and share all expenses & costs via a Google Sheet, which will be updated regularly: bit.ly/feedthefrontline-sf
- Any leftover funds after this is over will be donated to a charity on the front lines of the pandemic, such as Meals on Wheels (TBD). Though, realistically, we'd love to deliver meals until we completely run out of funds.
