Feed Toronto's Homeless Community

Hey everyone, I'm Sarah, a single mom living on Ontario Disability, who received support during one of my lowest times and felt the need to pay it forward. I've been helping Feed the Homeless in downtown Toronto for the last 4 years. In my humble opinion, this initiative is by far the most rewarding activity that our entire charity does.

I moved out of my home at 17 years old, and have experienced homelessness on several occasions. I know how difficult it is sleeping in shelters, when you're lucky enough to get into one, and how much you crave home-cooked meals. I also know how difficult it is to never know where you're going to get food or where you'll sleep, from one day to the next.

Between having conversations with friends who have been homeless, as well as the clients that we serve on a monthly basis, I have learned that you can never tell a book by its cover. We also never know what someone has been through in their life to bring them to this point.

For example: Back on December 10th, 2023, I met a 13 year old boy named David who was wearing shorts and flip flops at one of our Community Meals For The Homeless. After getting to know him and his family, I learned that they were refugees from Hungary, who had been sleeping in a stairwell as a family of 7, with the youngest being 3 years old. With the support of our volunteers and donors, we were able to get them proper winter clothing, some food to fill their bellies, and into a rooming house while they wait for a shelter. His parents have now started a cleaning business, and all the kids are also in school... This is just one example of the types of people that come out to our meal every month.

Now 4 years after this all began, we are a registered charity looking to give back to those in the greatest need. We support low-income families across Toronto, focusing on those with disabilities, mental health challenges, seniors and the unhoused.

We distribute approximately 200 home-cooked meals at every event, with everything from meat, pastas and vegetables to drinks, desserts and fruit. We would like to be able to increase the amount of food that we distribute to these community neighbors in need, by raising $10,000 to ensure our program can continue.

At Toronto Cares Initiative, we feel that having quality, healthy food to eat is an absolute necessity and should not be treated like a privilege. Do you also agree? Help us Feed the Homeless in our community today!
