Hi, there. My name is Jade and I am a chef in one of the NYC restaurants located in Pier 17. Two weeks ago, my restaurant closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a week passed, I received notification that I have been let go along with all of my other co-workers. For the first time in my life, I had to file for unemployment.
I know that my story is similar to many New Yorkers who have lost their jobs recently. I worry about how to pay for rent and other bills, and of course - the infamous corona virus. When I watch the news on television or online, it seems as though things are not going to get better anytime soon. As a result, I have been constantly stressed and anxious about my life and the great unknown. Amidst all this despair, I was reminded that even though my situation seems grim, I realized that there are other people who may have it worse.
Healthcare workers and first responders have been on the front lines fighting the invisible enemy – corona virus. Some had issues with the dwindling supply of proper PPEs (Personal Protection Equipment). Some healthcare workers and their families have even contracted the disease themselves. I was saddened by all these news but I know that I cannot do what they do. Nevertheless, I wanted to do something.
These healthcare professionals are overwhelmed, stressed, and beaten. Many have difficulty finding time to have a proper meal while working because of the overwhelming volume of people who are sick. For this reason, I wanted to be able to use my cooking skills to be an encouragement. I want to be able to take care of them as they take care of our loved ones by giving them personally cooked/prepared meals to fuel them as they go back to the battlefield.
With the help of my sister and my mother, we packed homemade lunches and distributed it to Bellevue Hospital Emergency Department and New York Presbyterian ICU where my brother-in-law and friend work. We started with these two places but we want to help more. We would like to ask you for your donation to help us expand this project of feeding our healthcare workers to other hospitals and departments so we can remind our healthcare heroes that we care and support them.
If you could, please donate to help fund our goal.
