Why donate to this campaign?

COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdown has caused a huge disruption to the earning capabilities of the most vulnerable people in Bangladesh, such as rickshaw-pullers, day laborers, cleaners, street vendors etc. We will give them an essential food package and antiseptic soap which costs approximately $10-$12; and believe me or not, it can feed a family of 4 for approximately 25 days.

We have identified 127 such families in crucial need of relief by speaking to our relatives on the ground - one of whom is my own mama (mom’s brother). My relatives will ensure transparency when it comes to proper resource allocation and distribution amongst the families identified. These families and their breadwinners used to be day labourers, rickshaw pullers, as mentioned above, and would rely on their day to day wages to get by. Therefore, this aid is crucial for their survival right now. We received a comprehensive list of the family demographics including - their names, family sizes, contact information, their occupation, etc. They are all located in Deobhog, Nayangonj and we have our own family members who are on the ground ready to put this campaign into action.

Summary of the initiative:

- Supplies will be bought from: Ahead Wholesale Store, Digbabbu Bazar Narayanganj

- The grocery packages will be created in the store with proper packing and sanitization. 

- The packages will be delivered to the doorsteps of families in Deobhog, Naryangonj on a need based rationing.

- All the money raised through this campaign will be solely utilized towards purchasing groceries and any overhead operating cost will be covered by the organizer.

 This totals to BDT 885 ($11 USD) to feed a family of four for approximately 20 days.

 Who are we?

My name is Asha Begum and I work in the Hospitality Industry based in Las Vegas, NV. I am a 24-year-old who graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Degree in Hospitality Management in 2018. With this campaign and the assistance of my friend Farhim Zaman, I hope to provide for those who truly may not survive the impact from COVID-19. Farhim Warith Zaman is a Risk Consultant at KPMG LLP based in Tysons Corner, Virginia. He is a 25-year-old who graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Cyber Security Degree in 2018. With the help of my amazing friends we are hoping to bring this project to its success and help the people in need.

Rabib Alam is originally from Chittagong, Bangladesh.  He is currently a Toronto based IT Project Manager and graduated with a Degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2017. His goal is to leverage his strong network of friends and professional connections, mostly from Canada, to reach our fundraising goal. A lot of us in North America have the privilege of either working from home, or receiving monthly government benefits. However, people back in his home country are going hungry and desperate to get back to work. Your aid can literally save lives.

Zainah Azam is an undergraduate student at UBC pursuing a holistic understanding of the human brain and behavior. She spends most of her time doing research. Being in various projects and having worked with people from all walks of life has made her realize her true niche: developing research to make a meaningful impact in society. She is also an advocate for women and children of domestic abuse. Zainah believes that the best way to bring people together is to have them fight for a cause together. She wants to be able to support this initiative by bringing her family, friends and various networks together.

Reshma Sirajee is currently a first year Medical Sciences Graduate student at the University of Alberta. Her research studies focuses on children’s growth and brain development issues. The goal is to implement the research findings for community based intervention programs that are run by community workers. Reshma believes that as a global citizen and having the privilege of living in Canada, it is our responsibility to empower others to overcome their struggles by giving them the necessary tools for success. This is why she is working with #BacharLorai to ensure that people of Bangladesh have access to resources and tools for their needs.

Debosree Mukherjee is originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh. She started working as an environmental consultant based in Alberta following her graduation in 2019 from the University of Alberta's Civil and Environmental Engineering program. She is hoping to utilize her previous fundraising experience and her personal network to reach the fundraising goal. She believes that it's crucial for everyone to come together and help those in need in unprecedented times.
