Feed the Hungry in Guatemala

Donation protected
For the first time since 2006, we are heading back to Guatemala as a family of 4. Something we haven't done since meeting Emily for the first time as a baby.  Each of us has at one point in the last 11 years been back to this beautiful country, our dear daughter has not.  This will be Emily's first trip and we are all so very excited to share this time together.  Hard to beleive we leave in a mere 5 weeks!

While we will be site seeing and visiting friends, we will also be traveling to Panajachel on Lake Atitlan and the NGO, Mayan Families.  You may remember on our last trip we installed stoves and water filters for a number of indigenous families in need as well as helped to construct a huge contrete retaining wall.  This time, we will be visiting the sisters we sponsor for school and, since it's so close to Christmas, we will be helping to pack and distribute Christmas food baskets to many of the indigenous families in need.

Mayan Families operates mainly in the Department of Sololá; in some of the poorest communities in the country. These communities are primarily indigenous, and face their own unique challenges in addition to the country's challenges as a whole.

Mayan Families believes that everyone should have the chance to partake in traditional holiday celebrations. Unfortunately, many of the families they work with in rural Guatemala often do not have enough to eat on a daily basis, often going without, and sharing a festive meal with their loved ones during holidays is impossible.

To ensure that these vulnerable families can also participate in these special days of joy, they created festive food baskets filled with both nutritional staples and traditional treats to prepare each holiday meal.

The baskets hold enough ingredients to feed a family of six for a week, and offer it in a reusable plastic basket that they can use in the future.  Just think, for only $40 a basket, you can feed 6 people for 7 days!

We are hoping, with your help, we can raise enough money to cover the cost of 50 baskets.  Think about that.  50 baskets feeds 300 people for a week.  That's roughly 1500 - 2100 meals!  So this year when you are spending money for Christmas presents, can you make one of them a basket of food for a family in need?  We will be overjoyed to deliver the basket this holiday in person.

If you would like to help us reach our goal of 50 food baskets for families that otherwise might not have any food over Christmas, we would be greatly apprecative.

And from our family to yours, thank you and Merry Christmas!

Margey, Mike, Sean and Emily
