An almost total absence of visitors means that many caretakers are struggling to afford food for Thailand's 4,000 captive elephants. With elephants increasingly malnourished due to the loss of income, the situation is at a crisis point. This is yet another twist in the saga of the exploitation of elephants, which animal rights campaigners have long been fighting to protect from the abusive tourism industry (BBC.com)
Some elephants may be sold to zoos, or may be returned to the illicit logging business, which officially banned the use of elephants in 1989. We don’t want that loop of survival alternatives to come back. If there is no support forthcoming to keep them safe, these elephants will either starve to death or may be put on to the streets to beg. Owners will have to choose between themselves and their elephants. It's a very bleak outlook unless some financial help is received ASAP (Nytimes.com).
Our mission is to directly help feed the starving elephants in the town of Ao Nang, where we are currently staying during lockdown.
My house mate Alyssa and I are really hoping to have a positive impact here in Thailand as we wait out the Corona pandemic. We want to contribute as much as possible and support the local elephants, so here we are trying to raise money for the delivery of elephant food.
Elephants need up to 150kg of food per day – that's around 375 tins of baked beans. They eat so much that they can spend up to three-quarters of their day eating. Happy elephants are usually swinging their tails or flapping their ears or even giving themselves dust baths to keep cool. However, elephants get depressed when they're hungry, no longer displaying these happy behaviours.
Their main diet consists of grasses, pineapple leaves, roots and tree bark, with some added bananas and sugar cane for snacks! One truck of pineapple leaves feeds three elephants for four days. We want to buy as many trucks as possible!

We are liaising with Ao Nang Elephant Sanctuary regarding the sourcing of the elephant food. They are helping us organise the paperwork for the supplier in order to have the trucks delivered safely past the current police checkpoints which are in place for this towns lockdown. They have informed us that there are exceptions for entry if vehicles carry agricultural products. When the truck arrives, we will wait for them and pay the supplier directly to ensure that your donations are going directly towards paying for food only. We will post pictures, videos and receipts of each delivery, and keep all donors fully updated through this journey.
