Fundraiser for Elephant Food!

On 20th January, our team at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary (Josh, Lucile, Savili, Sarah, Zabby, Carly and Kerri) will be completing a strenuous obstacle course in the village and surrounding area, competing against one another to raise much needed funds for our elephants' food! The winners will be the ones who complete the obstacle course first and who raises the most funds for our elephants.

The difficulty of the obstacle course we do will be determined by the funds raised. The level are explained below:

£0-1000:
- Sling shot targets across the river
- piggy back with the kids/bags of corn or rice through the village

£1000-2000:
- Sling shot targets across the river
- piggy back with the kids/bags of corn or rice through the village
- rock and spoon race across the rickety suspension bridge
- mud crawl outside the temple grounds

£2000-3000:
- Sling shot targets across the river
- piggy back with the kids/bags of corn or rice through the village
- rock and spoon race across the rickety suspension bridge
- mud crawl outside the temple grounds
- blindfold across the unstable bamboo bridge
- run to the school (2km+)

£3000 + :
- Sling shot targets across the river
- piggy back with the kids/bags of corn or rice through the village
- rock and spoon race across the rickety suspension bridge
- mud crawl outside the temple grounds
- blindfold across the unstable bamboo bridge
- run to the school (2km+)
- elephant dung and mud throw corridor 

The hot/dry season in Thailand is coming up and the elephants' natural food foilage in the forest is dwindling. The forest still supports our elephants foraging needs during the daytime, but every year from February-May, we need to provide supplementary food for our elephant's night-time eating habits. Every rainy season we have been planting grass in our mahouts' fields to provide for this, but as elephants can eat about 200kg of food each day, this is not enough to last the full duration of the dry season.


What are the costs?

During the dry season, we need to employ grass cutters who, every couple of days, need to drive up to two hours each way to find enough food to sustain our elephants.  The supplementary food available during this time of year is corn stalks, napier grass and banana trees - which our elephants love eating! The cost of each trip is roughly £54/$75USD which covers their petrol costs, entry fee into any areas and a small salary.

The cost per month will then be about £810/ $1,050USD

Total costs for 4 months is roughly  £3,240/$4,200USD


Why do we need to fundraise?

The dry season in Thailand is also the low tourist season, which means that there is a decrease in the incoming funds allocated to covering all project and elephant related costs.  Additionally, as explained above, the dry season sees a significant increase in expenses.
