FEED THE FRONTLINE.
Hearing about COVID-19 back in January, seemed like a horrible crisis people across the globe were fighting. The crisis kept getting closer and closer to home as the time went by. In January, I had dropped my little sister of at the SFO airport as she headed to study abroad to Italy, a month and a half later I found myself picking her up as her study abroad program had been cancelled due to COVID-19. The stories coming from Italy were horrifying, and just like that, those same stories were been told about my community. More and more people were getting infected by the virus. I was asked to work from home, my local gym shut down, I had to battle people for chicken and toilet paper at the supermarket, and in a blink of an eye I lost the ability to see my family and friends, and had my life just like everyone else’s turned upside down.
Week after week, I am inundated with saddening news regarding COVID-19. Opening the Nextdoor app has become insanely depressing as I continue to read stories about restaurants I used to visit getting shutdown and others asking for help to stay open. Seeing this broke my heart and I decided to do a take-out meal weekly to support our local businesses, but obviously that was not enough. Simultaneoulsy, as I scrolled through my Instagram feed I kept seeing friends who were in the frontlines, asking people to stay home as they stayed in the hospitals dealing with COVID-19.
As I became more and more frustrated with the inability to help my community, I decided to find ways I could help in a more impactful way. I picked up my phone and started making calls to the near by hospitals and that’s when I came in contact with the Director at the Emergency Room at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland.
I had recently seen on the news and social media people supporting the frontline workers by providing them with meals from local businesses and thought I could do the same for my community.
As I coordinated with the Director at the Emergency room, he gave me some guidance on what meals to bring and slot times for when it was best to deliver food. With help of friends and work colleagues we were able to raise money to provide lunch to the morning staff, while also supporting one of my favorite spots in Oakland, Belly Uptown, and although this is of great help! I thought we could do more.
That’s why today I am asking you for your help to join me in this effort, to come together as a community to support those who needs us the most.
The money we raise here will continue to go to provide meals to Oakland Kaiser Permanente Emergency room and support our local spots.
I’ve been given delivery slots to support morning, afternoon and night crew.
Morning crew: 40 staff, delivery hours: 10:30AM - 11AM
Afternoon crew: 60 staff, delivery hours: 5PM - 5:30PM
Night crew: 40 staff, delivery hours: 11PM
