FedEx Family House is a home for out-of-town families who are having to temporarily reside in Memphis while their child is undergoing treatment at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. This allows families in need to offset the cost of residence so that they can spend their time caring for their child. With the costs of healthcare ever rising, this allows parents a bit of a break from the financial hardships that come with these already extremely stressful times. During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (April 18-25), the Medical Laboratory students at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will be raising money to ensure that this no-cost housing for families undergoing hardships will still be able to be provided at no cost to them. This organization is completely funded from donations alone. This group of students has chosen to support this charity because they understand how expensive healthcare is, and realize the burden it leaves on parents who simply can not afford accommodations here in Memphis. We want to make sure that these children receive the best care possible and acknowledge that some families would simply have to turn elsewhere if it were not for this service. With many parents not having the ability to work while their child is undergoing crucial treatment, this small comfort is something we would like to see continue for these families. Having a child hospitalized alone is taxing enough, and this allows relief to one of the many other obstacles they are having to face.
