Six years ago, Susan E. Evans and I felt compelled by the fear of a second term of the Trump presidency to produce an evening of virtual theater, We called it: "The Private Life Of The (Not So) Master Race." It was our attempt to re imagine Bertolt Brecht's "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich" for the early 2020’s.

Our goal was to create a library of plays to invite people to resist the emergence of a totalitarian mindset in this country. Fast forward to 2026. In retrospect the events of 2020 were only a harbinger of more threatening things to come. With the return of a triumphant MAGA crowd to Washington, we are witnessing an even more nightmarish scenario of naked aggression against the world and a display of outright contempt for Constitutional norms, political consensus and for anyone who thinks differently or simply wishes to follow an alternative vision of happiness.

Based on this worsening situation, we feel compelled to return to Brecht’s masterwork to inspire resistance. Our goal is to create a collaborative vision of how ordinary people react to a threatening era of even greater darkness and oppression.

We’re planning a livestream virtual production for early April 2026. Stay tuned for details and explore this project at https://www.thebrechtproject.org.

We’ll work with the writers from the 2020 production plus new playwrights to deepen our exploration of parallels between today’s America and 1930s Germany. Returning production members will be joined by new creative collaborators. We expect to cast about 20 actors, mixing alumni and fresh talent.

For the first effort, we set a goal of $7500. We hope to come close to that amount again. Importantly, aside from the fees for the streaming platform, everything we raise will go to the artists. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated! Every dollar counts and every dollar helps!
