Hi Dan and Richard here , we have just come back from a lovely 2 week stay in a lovely little place called Turunc in Turkey. Ultimately it turned into a dog mission to save this gorgeous little man from the streets.
Now !! We certainly had no intention of doing this but ultimately it dawned on us that we had no option. While we was there we stumbled across this little man roaming the village. Many evenings sleeping in the curbside outside the taxi rank just by a place called fidans. A few evening we had gone to the market and purchased chicken or what ever we could get as they dont really stock many options for dogs. Anyway we gradually grew fond of this little man and his eyes really told you how he must have felt. We discovered he like many others in Turkey had been roaming the village with an another dog which the locals had named crunch. Crunch was lucky enough to have been taken in by a lovely lady and he is now in the shelter waiting on his 4 month checks to be able to travel to his home in Scotland. This meant Sultan who we have now named was left on his own to fend for himself without his pal we met a lovely group of people who really give us an insight to the situation these poor animals are in and its truly heartbreaking. They was fit to scan him for us and you guessed it he was a stray. Thrown food from restaurants or probably fed bread that the restaurants throw out. He wasnt in the worst of conditions but his little bones you could feel. We had a little bit more insight given to us at the process and what the rough costs are to rescue him. We thought and thought and thought and we do have other financial commitments but absolutely was not going to leave him . While thinking about this we had sort of made our minds up until the 2nd to last evening, and we stumbled across him curled up sleeping in an alleyway tucked into a hose pipe . This was the final straw and that made our decision. Unfortunately Turkish street dogs are either born or strayed from owners that dont give these animals the love they need. Turkey is renowned for this and the government are trying thier best to fix the situation for all cats and dogs in the Marmaris ,icmeler and turunc area. But unlike in england these dogs may not all have the happy ending they deserve and some probably more than a few will be euthanized which truly truly brakes my heart . Yes we could adopt from home, but these dogs really do need people not just from turkey but allover to give as many of them the chance of a happy life they deserve. I wish the rehoming process was much easier here in the uk but charity's are so much more prudent and picky on where these animals go which is why I believe is the reason the uk shelters dont have much space. These dogs are left alone in the streets and when the end of season comes there is no one there to feed them or look after them. The night we saw him in the hose pipe we knew immediately he was coming home. We took him back to our hotel on the sly as we was not prepared to leave him another night , he slept like a baby and the following day we made a trip to a lovely lady in gokova who puts her soul into the animals to get them what they deserve. We also made a visit to the vets and he has been given his 1st rabies vaccine. We also managed to get him back with his best friend Crunch as Crunch was saved only a week before so they will be able to spend the remainder of thier time together in sanctuary knowing they are safe until they come to thier forever homes. I really could go on and on we have learnt so much about the animal situation in Turkey and if we could all save a soul the world would be a better place . This is not something we wanted to do by any means but we have other large financial commitments now we will do whatever we have too to get him home. The rough cost will be around 2.5k in total after all rabies checks , chipping, titre testing , boarding, animal passport and transport back to us. Even if you feel you can not donate please share and get little mans story out there just like his friends story did. All costs will be posted and updated via social media or go fund me . Any remaining donations from what we raise will be donated to the Turunc cats protection and rescue housing association. These lovely people are out all day protecting the cats and feeding them in the local areas and keeping the stray population as low as possible by neutering. They solely rely on fundraising and do an incredible job .
Again we could go on and on but I hope this has given an insight into our story. Thanks for reading
Dan , Richard and Sultan ❤️❤️
