Hi! My name is Mel. Most of you probably know me but if you don't, I am just a silly guy who is an excellent home cook, has terrible taste in television, and is in pursuit of a titless existence.

I’ve been trying to get top surgery since October 2023. I was initially told my OHIP application (which would cover most of the surgery) was approved. In August 2025, I found out my original application was never approved. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care had asked for an additional referral and supplementary material, which I was never notified of and was never sent.

I’ve been trying to make OHIP funding work but have faced so many barriers not just administratively but also due to my BMI (which is extremely limiting in terms of finding clinics - private or public). Despite firmly believing in a comprehensive, accessible and robust public health system - I have decided to pursue surgery at a private clinic that is not restrictive based on BMI and can offer me a date before the end of the year.

I just want to move through the world in a body that I recognize and feels like my own. I don’t want to have to hurdle over any more barriers or navigate any more moving targets. I don’t take reaching out for this kind of support lightly. But I am dedicated to re-investing all of the kindness and compassion I receive on this journey back into my community, both through my job and my personal commitments and values.
