Father with medical costs for neurological injury

Hi, my name is Ewan Hawk, the 18 y/o son of Paul Hawk, a single parent. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 5 years old and my father has been my sole support since then.

In September of 2020 he got sick with what he thought was a basic stomach bug. After four days, he fell out of bed and couldn’t get back in. The ambulance transported him to the hospital where was in a coma for five days due to sepsis and double pneumonia caused by a sever UTI and bladder problems. He had to have an emergency medical procedure on his kidneys to drain the fluids out of his body.

When he woke up from the coma, he could not stand up or walk. He spent another 3 weeks in the ICU where he was given powerful antibiotics before he was discharged. He was at home receiving IV antibiotics for another five weeks. He did physical therapy and had a second surgery on his urological system. His mobility never improved as he continued to experience mobility issues and balance issues. He can’t walk without a cane or walker, he can’t stand for more then a few minutes, can’t bend over and pick things up off the floor, he can’t walk up stairs.

He falls all the time.

Frustrated with these mobility issues and injuring himself with falls, he went to a neurologist who ordered an MRI of his brain where they found lesions on his brain and white matter disease. He was given some additional PT to help, but there was no improvement. He fell again late last year and broke two ribs which caused a collapsed lung, sepsis again and had to have another surgical procedure to remove 2.5 liters of fluid from his chest cavity. He’s fallen additional times and injured his head again.

I started to notice that he was getting confused a lot and forgetting words and facts. He went to a new neurologist recently who suspects that my fathers is suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which causes his immune system to attack his nervous systems, which would explain his mobility, balance and memory issues. We have a number of tests scheduled in the next few months to get more information.

Our medical expenses are through the roof from all of the hospital stays, doctor visits, and medications. We have been living off my father’s savings for almost three years, but those funds are quickly disappearing.

He has applied for disability but has been denied. We have a lawyer who is working on our behalf, but help won’t come for the next 6-9 months.

If you would consider helping us with the medical bills, getting additional PT above what his insurance provides and help sustain us until he receives disability insurance and I get a full time job in September of this year when I graduate from trade school, we would be very grateful. I’m not ready to lose the only parent I have left. Thank you very much.
