For Father Tom Brindley’s 65th Birthday!
My name is Steve Lasley. My wife Alison and I are friends of Tom and Lorna Brindley and their family.
I was thinking of Father Tom and a gift that we could give him that would be meaningful to him. Sometimes it is necessary to dream. To think of things that may seem impossible or perhaps extravagant. I thought of what extravagant gift we could give Father Tom that would touch a place in his heart and mind and body that may be out of reach for him. What would be a gift that he would never buy for himself?
As I thought of this, I remembered that I have heard Father Tom say several times that he has felt like he was born in the wrong era. I consider Father Tom both a scholar and a great student of history as well as an amazing father, husband, counselor, spiritual director, man of wisdom, friend, and priest par excellence.
There are things about the era of history of World War II that are very fascinating to Father Tom. One of them is the iconic image of the WWII fighter plane, the Mustang P-51. It is considered one of the best fighter planes of that era of history. Of the 15,000 made, there are only about 175 left. What if we could give a ride to Father Tom in one of the few P-51 war birds that are still flying?
Well, right in our backyard of Sonoma Valley, there is a P-51 that you can get a ride in. It’s not cheap. The Marlin V-12 engine that produces 1490 Horsepower is not measured in how many miles per gallon of gas you get but how many gallons per hour it takes (60-120 gallons per hour depending on how you fly it). So this is an extravagant gift to even consider. The cost is $1699 for a 30 minutes flight that takes off from Sonoma Valley airport (Vintageaircraft.com).
To most of us, this is without question an extravagant thing to think of as a gift. Yet, I think of the extraordinary person that Father Tom is and it makes this gift seem small.
Our goal is to raise $2,099. $1699 for the flight, $300 for a gopro camera to film it, plus $99.95 which is the 5% fee that gofundme charges.
