Our son is 34 years old and has to have open heart surgery to cure a rare disease called chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). We have a lot of challenges ahead for the surgery to happen. He has no insurance, he has five children and cannot work, and we can't pay for the medication that will keep him alive while we wait for the surgery to be approved, the surgery will have to be in San Diego or Cleveland; whichever place will take him first. Without the surgery the doctors have given him a two to four month window to live. They believe that with medication his quality of life will improve to 30% prior to the surgery, for now he can't walk from one room to another without being totally out of breath. They have entered him into a study that may help others that have this disease, they do not know what causes it but they have to remove hardened blood clots from his lungs. This is going to cost a lot of money, time, patience, people and God’s hands with the surgeons. His father and I have had to support him and the family for the last few months, waiting on tests and diagnoses. The Doctor gave us the paperwork to fill out for disability but that will take awhile and will not provide immediate help. His wife cannot work with the five children and they live in a rural area. The funds would be used for Food for family, the medication for one month is $6,000, the doctor is trying to get it but it may take a month, Misc home expenses like diapers, electric, etc., travel to the hospital for him and his wife, food and misc while at the hospital.
