Father of 4, Special Education Teacher

Robert Valdez, son, husband, family man father of four, Lundy Special Education Teacher, UTEP Graduate student, was pursuing life goals and aspirations. On December of 2017, Robert suffered a devastating massive stroke that nearly took his life, leaving him with severe physical and neurological challenges in which to overcome. With strong faith, prayer, overwhelming support from family, friends, and amazing therapists, Robert has miraculously made tremendous gains.

Consequently, due to this type of brain injury/stroke, Robert and any person that intends to communicate with him, come face to face with Aphasia. Aphasia impairs the ability to speak, read and or write. It created a barrier between Robert and his passion in taking part of advocating for the Special Education community.

On the bright side, Aphasia patients have the ability to relearn language. Robert and family, would propel and make great strides from powerful and challenging communication techniques offered by an Intensive Aphasia Therapy program here in the Sun City, sadly not covered by insurances. This being one of the greatest obstacles for Robert’s recovery. The number of hours required to gain independence is unmatched to what insurances deem necessary.

Myself, his mother, father, close family, and friends have gone and will always go the extra mile to help Robert succeed. To help him return to what God called him to do; to inspire and advocate for his amazing students, in which he misses tremendously.

The great news is Jackie, Robert’s first amazing Speech Therapist was placed in Robert’s path by our Lord. She is impacted and touched by how this condition negatively impacts families and shatters the autonomy and self-esteem of these individuals. Her tenacity and persistence, her selflessness and generous heart has led her to initiate our very first Aphasia Connection Center in El Paso. Jackie is the only Speech Therapist in El Paso who underwent the Intensive Aphasia workshops and training in Toronto, Canada. God placed the desire in her heart to help families afflicted with Aphasia starting with OUR family. We see this as a true blessing from God. We kindly ask for your continued financial support to cover the cost of material, time, and resources required to take part in strengthening and empowering Robert and the Aphasia community. Ultimately with the intention of providing hope, a sense of belonging, and eventually reintroducing Robert, to the joy of contributing to our beautiful El Paso community.
