On Wednesday August 12th 2020 Slava and his daughter Simone were involved in a brutal hit and run accident close to home. He was on a bicycle with his 8-year-old daughter and was hit by a vehicle on 37th and Ortega in the Sunset District of San Francisco. Slava had followed all bicycle safety guidelines and at the time of the incident was in an area closed off to cars.
The Driver of a Red Mustang Convertible hit Slava and his daughter then fled the scene. Slava's daughter was in the proper bicycle child seat and was treated at the hospital with minor injuries. Unfortunately, Slava wasn't so lucky. His leg was almost disconnected from his body and was hanging on some muscle tissue his collar bone was shattered, tailbone was broken, he broke his nose and lost several teeth. He had numerous broken bones on his face and also deep lacerations his face.
If it wasn't for a bystander who witnessed the accident and called 911 immediately, and the ambulance showing up within 5 minutes, Slava would have died from extreme blood loss. The San Francisco General trauma team had to reconnect his leg using multiple metal rods among so many other procedures.
Although we are so grateful to have Slava with us, we know the road to recovery is long. The Kaplan family asks for your support during this difficult time, anything helps.
