Fatal landslide at the Kiteezi dumpsite in Kampala, Uganda

Donation protected
On 10th August 2024, a devastating landslide struck the Kiteezi Dumpsite community in Kampala, Uganda, claiming lives, destroying homes, and displacing families including many children, elderly people, and people with disabilities.

The community, which relied heavily on the dumpsite for their livelihoods, now faces unimaginable challenges in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Before the landslide, Kiteezi was home to hundreds of waste pickers, workers and their families, who, despite difficult conditions, found a way to support themselves through the recycling and waste management activities at the dumpsite including waste collection, and sorting in the community.

These hardworking individuals played a crucial role in managing the city's waste, turning trash into a source of income and survival.

The landslide has taken more than 30 lives and has also swept away homes, belongings, and the means by which these families earned their living.

May all the victims rest in peace.

In the wake of this disaster, immediate support is needed to provide relief to those affected.

Our fundraising campaign aims to raise financial support to help the Kiteezi community in several critical ways:

1. Emergency Relief. Provide food, clean water, temporary shelter, clothes and medical care to those displaced by the landslide.

2. Rebuilding Efforts. Assist in reconstruction of community structures that were destroyed, enabling families to regain stability.

3. Livelihood Support. Help affected families rebuild their livelihoods through educational tools, and support to restart their lives.

The Kiteezi community is resilient, but they cannot recover alone.

Your support will be a lifeline for these families, helping them rebuild their lives and restore hope after this devastating event.

By standing together, we can help the Kiteezi community overcome this tragedy and ensure a brighter future for those affected.

Thank you for your solidarity.

Update 21/8: This final image shows the extent of the damage. The entire face of the dumpsite has been destroyed - there are yellow diggers in the middle excavating the waste and searching for more missing people.
