Empower Farmers in West Africa and Around the World with FarmSmarter
Across Nigeria and West Africa, millions of smallholder farmers face devastating crop losses each year due to preventable plant diseases. Without access to timely advice or affordable support, many families lose their harvests, leaving them without income and entire communities facing food insecurity.
FarmSmarter is tackling this challenge with a mobile app that brings artificial intelligence and climate-smart farming knowledge directly to farmers’ phones. Our goal is simple but transformative: to reduce crop loss, improve yields, and give disadvantaged farmers the tools they need to build resilient livelihoods.
Why This Matters
Globally, there are more than 600 million smallholder farmers. In Nigeria alone, over 70 million depend on farming to feed their families and generate income. Yet they face enormous challenges: limited access to finance, unreliable information, and devastating losses caused by crop diseases.
Agricultural consultants charge hundreds of pounds per day, far beyond the reach of most smallholders. Existing digital tools either lack crop disease recognition or require constant connectivity. FarmSmarter is designed to bridge that gap. It is low-cost, accessible offline, and created in partnership with farmers themselves.
We know this works. Already, more than 100 farmers in Nigeria are piloting the app with excellent results, and over 500,000 are waiting to join once the beta version is launched. We have also been recognized internationally, winning the Ashoka–HSBC Global Green Changemakers Challenge in 2023 for our potential to transform sustainable farming in Africa.
A Global Tool for Growers
At the heart of FarmSmarter is our AI crop disease recognition tool, which allows users to photograph a sick plant and instantly receive a diagnosis along with advice on sustainable treatment methods. This innovation helps prevent catastrophic crop losses, reduces reliance on costly chemicals, and protects the environment.
Although our immediate focus is on empowering farmers in West Africa, FarmSmarter is not just for Africa. The growing crop and disease library within the app is equally valuable for small-scale, urban, and domestic growers worldwide. Anyone who supports this campaign can download the app and try it for themselves, experiencing firsthand how it works. Whether you’re tending a community garden in London, a balcony plot in Berlin, or a family farm in Lagos, FarmSmarter offers practical, science-based solutions for healthier crops.
Training Local Ambassadors
Technology alone is not enough. To make sure knowledge spreads effectively within farming communities, we are also training 'FarmSmarter Ambassadors'. These are local farmers who act as trainers, introducing the app to their peers, showing how to use it, and sharing the benefits of climate-smart practices.
Each Ambassador has the potential to support hundreds of fellow farmers. By equipping them with the skills and tools they need, we create a ripple effect where knowledge and good practice spread from farmer to farmer, strengthening whole communities.
How Donations Will Be Used
Your donation will directly fund two critical priorities:
- Further development of our AI crop disease recognition system to expand its accuracy and reach.
- Training and deployment of FarmSmarter Ambassadors across Nigeria and West Africa.
Together, these efforts will give thousands of disadvantaged smallholder farmers the ability to safeguard their crops, reduce losses, and move from subsistence to sustainable success.
The Impact of Your Support
Even modest contributions will make a significant difference. Donations will help us improve the app, train Ambassadors, and reach farmers in need. But they also have a global benefit: every supporter can access and use the app themselves. This means that funders are not just giving to a cause—they are joining it, trying the technology, and seeing the results in their own gardens and farms.
