On Friday July 19 our family farm was hit by a devastating storm with winds exceeding 100mph. The storm was not classified as a tornado but called a macroburst. It was 15 miles wide and 25 miles long and left our farm nearly destroyed. My father, a Vietnam Veteran who runs the farm himself with the exception of harvest time when he has added help. He has been suffering from numerous medical issues, which limits his ability to sustain long periods of physical labor. I work in a Laboratory management position in the state of Florida and am forced to take a leave of absence to assist in the disaster cleanup and reconstruction efforts.
Luckily, the house made it through the storm with limited damage and my father still has a roof over his head. However, the barn is completely destroyed, the roof on one of the buildings is completely gone, a wall on the granary is missing, multiple windows are missing on different buildings, farm truck was hit with an unknown object and it isn’t running anymore, there are a lot of fallen trees, and some of the electric lines around the property have been damaged.
We need to fix all the immediate issues as soon as possible. We need to remove all the wood and beams from the fallen barn, the roofing, trees and other debris that’s around the property. We need to rebuild the barn if possible to continue our farming operations. The missing roof on the standing building needs to be replaced asap before more damage occurs. The repair of the wall, windows and electric also needs to be accomplished. It is a daunting task for a 100 pound girl and her father to take on this task themselves but farmers are strong and persevere against the odds.
We are proud people that have always helped others and worked hard for what we have built. Unfortunately, the needed repairs are beyond our financial abilities. Any support you can offer will help hire laborers to help clear the debris, construction and roofing people to fix the buildings, etc.
