Greetings friends, and well met. My name is Michael Best. I am a co-owner of Kids Arcanum with my amazing wife Maureen. We are dedicated to creating fantasy adventure for kids of all ages. I will keep this as simple as possible and try not to go too negative. The realm is under siege. We all know that foolish people are still out in the world doing foolish things to books and stories that are important to society and that we care about personally. We can’t cure hatred in one fell swoop, but we can try to fight it, one book at a time, one painting at a time, one story at a time, one ballad at a time, one cosplay at a time, one D20 at a time. Fantasy adventure has played a crucial role throughout my entire life and continues to do so. It has shaped who I am and has given me more wonderful experiences than I can count. I have enjoyed sharing new realms of adventure with many people young and old and will do so until the day I die. That being said, I need to keep sharing it, perhaps now more than ever. I am asking you to rally to our banner and help Kids Arcanum do so. We must put as many fantasy books as we can in school libraries so that generations to follow will find their own wonderful adventures! I can only go so far on my own, and as we all know, the party rises to victory when it fights together! For every Harry Potter book that meets a fiery doom, ten shall rise from the ashes. This is our quest, yours and mine. We, the heroes of Kids Arcanum, humbly beseech you to join us. HUZZAH!
WE WANT FANTASY BOOKS! MOAR BOOKS! ALL OF THE BOOKS!
Our goal is simple. Stock the shelves with stories and adventure for school kids! We have been working with local school librarians and teachers in Portland, Maine, accumulating wish lists of fantasy books and graphic novels. There is a great need, my friends. We have several “wish lists” in the works now, and depending on how this GoFundMe goes, we hope to add more. The funds will be spent entirely on FANTASY GENRE BOOKS/GRAPHIC NOVELS for kids in schools that are in need. Teachers and librarians, if you are in dire need, PLEASE REACH OUT, and we can hopefully send some adventure your way. We have set a fairly modest goal of $400, so we can supply books to three of four local schools. If we reach that goal, Kids Arcanum will donate another $100 to the cause. If this snowballs, well, we’ll cross that bridge if we get there. I mean WHEN WE GET THERE, because you are all AWESOME!
Below is an Amazon wish list we have created to give you an idea of what we need. This list will likely change and grow. We have also engaged some local vendors for donations and have had some positive responses. Donating money is the easiest way to help us of course, BUT if you are more comfortable buying a book off the list, please do so! All of these books will ship to us directly, and we will hand-deliver them to each school in town. If this gets to the point where the schools are distant, we will have them shipped directly to the school's library.
We understand it has been a grueling couple of years for everyone and it is very easy to feel helpless as hate and ignorance consume the headlines. My friends, this is something we can all do to bring a little more light into the world. I remember a sense of awe and wonder as a child (And yes, I shed a few tears at reaching the end of a magical journey I wished would not stop!) after the reading the Chronicles of Narnia. It left me wanting more adventure though, so I searched, and searched, and I am still searching today. This is what I want for every kid. Let’s work together and start an amazing quest that never ends. Thank you and BREE YARK!
