Hello everyone. My name is Iain, and this backstory has the potential to become quite lengthy so I'll attempt to write out a brief summary. My apologies in advance.
- I'm 34 years old, recently medically disabled, and have been the primary caretaker (unpaid) of my Veteran father for several years now. Last year I was diagnosed with Haemochromatosis. Apparently I had been suffering from it for many years without any obvious symptoms... long enough that it has damaged my kidneys, liver, and heart. Tests have revealed that I'm now afflicted with stage 2 kidney disease, a dysfuntional liver, type 2 diabetes, severe neuropathy, and now... it's possible I'll be adding congestive heart failure to the list (according to the results of some recent test). I was forced to resign from my career in October of 2016 as I was no longer physically capable of performing my duties as expected. Along with my career, I lost my medical coverage... and since I could no longer afford most of my medications and treatment... my health has declined further.
(Update): Luckily, after months of red tape, I finally got approved for United Healthcare and have been able to slowly take steps to potentially improve my health. Finding employment I'm medically allowed to pursue has not been successful thus far.
- My father, Byron (shown), is 66 years old, a Veteran, widow, and survivor of two strokes which has left him permanently disabled. His wife, my mother, passed away after a three year battle with Mesothelioma. Between his disability and the medical debt of my mother's many treatments... my father made the difficult choice of giving up his home, the house I grew up in.
- Also in the family is my loving and patient girlfriend Sarah, along with her two daughters, Morgan and Lila. Morgan was recently diagnosed with mono, and Lila recently had to her appendix removed during a two week stay in the hospital due to appendicitis. Their father isn't really in the picture, and hasn't paid child support in over two years.
- Over the years I've been lucky enough to have befriended two lovable dogs to whom I promised to provide the happiest of lives when they were rescued. One of them, Kiba, was recently diagnosed with IBD. He requires a special hydrolyzed diet, and consistent steroid treatment.
- Medical expenses are mounting all around. We're at the point where we're falling behind on bills, barely managing to keep everyone fed, facing the fact that our current lease is up on April 13th, and we have to move. Our currently place is simply far too expensive to continue living here, unfortunately. We're financially drowning, and the stress is literally killing me.
Any donations at this point will be used to cover moving expenses, pay off and close a few cards that have been used to pay emergency medical expenses, and hopefully consolidate a few loose ends to allow for some breathing room. My entire family would be eternally greatful for any aid that is provided. When I was healthy and employed I was constantly volunteering and donating to charities. If...... when I regain my health I fully intend on paying it forward and continuing the same practices.
Thank you...
