How can I begin to explain the impact that my father, John Bird, has had?
My father was a man of high integrity and ideals. He believed that every individual could make an impact and that each one of us has something to contribute to society.
My father was empathetic and selfless. He always found ways to volunteer whether it was coaching or refereeing or volunteering for non-profit organizations.
My father was passionate and courageous. He was willing to take on the most difficult challenges, and as an active member of several parent advisories councils he gave thousands of hours to fight discrimination and advocate for students’ rights.
My father was determined and tenacious. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he approached it with the same ferocity as every other challenge in his life. He tried not to let it slow him down or prevent him from reaching his goals.
My father was relentlessly optimistic. He believed that he would be able to spend time with family, and catch up on his work, and return to his volunteer activities. We tried to support him in any and every way we could, but watched the cancer attack his body harder than any of us expected.
My father was a proud man. I know it would pain him to know we were asking for more help. We have already had such incredible support from friends, colleagues and extended family, and we thank all of you for it.
After six long months of lost income and in-home medical expenses our family has exhausted their savings. My father leaves behind a wife and two dependant children and they cannot afford to continue renting their current home. With additional expenses looming we know they are facing more difficult times.
We are searching for three bedrooms in Saanich near bus routes for less than 1,500/month. Our family has been looking for apartments and applying to co-ops without any success. If you have an apartment or basement suite for rent, or know of any coop opportunities, please let us know.
