Please help family who fled war in Ukraine
Donation protected
My name is April Sullivan and I'm trying to raise money for a young woman (Kate) who evacuated from Ukraine to Houston, TX with her elderly mother and young daughter. Kate has learned to speak, read, and write English and how to drive (in Houston!) in just a few months, while juggling the responsibilities of the head of the household. She is currently working at a fast-food restaurant within walking distance of the small apartment where they live, but the pay isn't enough to sustain a family of three. The money she earns barely covers the rent. Kate made her living in Ukraine by decorating for events (weddings, parties, etc.) and is incredibly talented, but desperately needs dependable transportation to pursue a more profitable occupation. My hope is to raise enough funds to purchase a reliable car with enough left over to cover insurance for a few months.
I met Kate in July and have been trying to help her and her family get oriented and bring some comfort to them in small ways. I have watched them overcome challenge after challenge since that time. Every day, there is a new hurdle to jump. I am humbled as I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to leave your home in complete distress with only what you can pack in a suitcase to start over where nothing is familiar, social services are strained and so much is beyond your control. You can read more about this family's journey to the US in the update section. The only thing I have to compare it to is from movies and books about war. It has opened my eyes to how fortunate I am to live in a country where I live freely in relative safety and how very precious our citizenship is.
Please help stack the cards in this family's favor. No amount is too small. I cannot stress that enough. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!!! If enough people give just a few dollars, Kate, her mother, and her daughter will have a chance to rebuild their lives.
