Family of 5 and puppy displaced due to fire
Donation protected
My name is Shannon. On December 27th in the middle of the night, I woke up to the smell of smoke. Our dog Mac was on the back deck barking due to the sound of glass breaking. When I looked over the deck to see what it was, I saw smoke coming from below us.
Thankfully I was able to get my husband up, who got our 2 kids (7 and 3yr) and mother in law up and out of the house while I called 911. We all got out safely and no one was in the 3 other units in our building.
The fire started in the lower right unit and went up to the unit next to us but did not catch my unit on fire. However, there was extreme smoke concentrations in my unit, which was ultimately declared uninhabitable.
Due to the severity of the smoke, everything in our place, including all of the kids Christmas presents they just got, furniture, clothes, etc, have to be professionally cleaned and some things have to be completely replaced (mattresses, food). The dry wall has to be completely gutted, which will take a few months before we can even move back into our place.
We appreciate everyone that has reached out with their kind thoughts and asking how they can help. We originally did not think the financial expense was going to be as big out of pocket, even with renters insurance, as it unfortunately is. We are asking for any help possible to cover living expenses, moving costs, storage, food costs, cleaning costs, etc. while we try to keep our kids as stable and at ease as possible.
Thank you
