Family & Friends, we are asking for support during an incredibly difficult time

Many of you already know that my nephew Nixon is facing heart surgery this week and will be receiving a pacemaker. What many don’t know is how much has already happened leading up to this—and how suddenly it all came about. Nixon is only 6 years old, and learning that a child needs heart surgery is something no family is ever prepared for. All of this unfolded less than three weeks ago, turning their world upside down almost overnight.

Just last week, Nixon had to undergo necessary dental surgery. His medical team required this to ensure there were no dental infections that could cause serious complications with the pacemaker. That procedure alone cost $3,700. While insurance covered a portion, Randy and Amanda were still left paying $900 out of pocket—an unexpected expense, especially so close to Christmas.

In preparation for this surgery, there have already been multiple pre-op appointments and procedures, requiring time off work for both parents. Following surgery, Amanda will need to take at least 12 weeks—if not more—off work to care for Nixon during his recovery, resulting in a significant loss of income.

All of Nixon’s care is being done at SickKids in Toronto, which means frequent travel back and forth. From where we live, that’s about a two-hour drive each way, adding ongoing costs for gas, hospital parking, and meals. During Nixon’s hospital stay and early recovery, Amanda will be staying in Toronto to be close to him, while Randy remains at home caring for their other son. This separation adds both emotional strain and additional expenses, including accommodations, food, and parking.

And this journey doesn’t end with surgery. There will be ongoing recovery, follow-up appointments, and continued checkups as Nixon heals and adjusts to life with a pacemaker.

I’ve started this GoFundMe with Randy and Amanda’s full blessing and permission—it was important to me to make sure they were comfortable before sharing their story. As of tonight, the $200 already donated has been received by them and is helping them prepare for the remainder of this very busy and stressful week.

Anyone who knows Randy and Amanda knows they are the kind of people who never ask for help, but are always there for others. Asking for support does not come easily to them, but right now, they truly need it.
