Support the Velazco Family After the Sudden Loss of Hernán

My name is Maria Velazco, and on April 15th, 2025, my dad, Hernán José Velazco, passed away unexpectedly at just 54 years old. The day before, he had a perfectly normal day—he worked alongside my mom (showing her the progress they had been making in their business, telling her how hopeful he was of what was to come), played tennis with his friends and went to bed next to my mom, the love of his life—never to wake up again. A sudden brain aneurysm took him from us in his sleep.

If you knew my dad, you know he was the definition of “rough around the edges”—never one to sugarcoat things and rarely the most polished in his delivery—but at his core, he was a teddy bear of a man. Everything he did, he did with his family in mind.

He was a sports lover through and through. From a young age, he played just about everything, but tennis became his lifelong passion. More recently, he picked up padel and loved playing it with his friends and my two younger brothers, Hernán Daniel and Jorge. He’s the reason I live in this incredible country today—he introduced me to tennis and guided me all the way until I achieved our shared dream of playing Division 1 tennis in the U.S. The same was true for my sister, who also earned a tennis scholarship here thanks to his (sometimes intense, but always loving) support.

He was also a self-taught musician who loved to play the cuatro, a traditional Venezuelan instrument. Music was his way of expressing joy and pride in his culture, and hearing him play always filled our home with warmth. Some of our favorite memories are of him playing and singing during family gatherings, filling the room with laughter, love, and the sound of home.

Fishing was another passion of his. In moments of grief, we find comfort in imagining him now casting lines in heaven, sharing drinks and stories with his own father, who passed away just four years ago—also peacefully in his sleep.

My sister and I have grown into strong and independent women, just as our parents raised us to be, But my dad was taken far too soon—before he could finish guiding my brothers, who are just 18 and 13 years old, through their own journeys.

As we navigate this devastating loss, we’re also facing significant financial uncertainty. My dad was the main provider for our family, and like many who leave this world too soon, he hadn’t yet prepared for something like this.

Mi nombre es María Velazco, y el 15 de abril de 2025, mi papá, Hernán José Velazco, falleció inesperadamente a tan solo 54 años de edad. El día anterior había sido completamente normal—trabajó durante el día con mi mamá (mostrándole los avances logrados en su empresa y compartiendo su entusiasmo sobre el futuro), jugó tenis con sus amigos y se fue a dormir junto a mi mamá, el amor de su vida—pero nunca volvió a despertar. Un ACV hemorrágico se lo llevo repentinamente.

Quienes conocieron a mi papá saben que era el claro ejemplo de alguien “duro por fuera, pero blando por dentro”. No siempre tenía la mejor forma de decir las cosas, y en sus propias palabras, "no tenia pelos en la lengua", pero en el fondo era un verdadero osito de peluche. Todo lo que hacía, lo hacía pensando en su familia.

Amaba el deporte con todo su ser. Desde joven practicó de todo, pero el tenis se convirtió en su pasión de por vida. Hace algunos años también comenzó a jugar pádel, lo cual disfrutaba mucho, especialmente al compartir la cancha con sus amigos y mis hermanos menores, Hernán Daniel y Jorge. Él es la razón por la cual hoy vivo en Estados Unidos: me introdujo al tenis y me acompañó en cada paso hasta lograr nuestro sueño compartido de jugar tenis en una universidad de División 1 en Estados Unidos. Lo mismo ocurrió con mi hermana, quien también consiguió una beca gracias a su guía (a veces intensa, pero siempre llena de amor).

Mi papá también era músico autodidacta y le encantaba tocar el cuatro. La música era su forma de expresar alegría y orgullo por su cultura, y escucharle tocar llenaba nuestro hogar de calidez. Algunos de nuestros recuerdos más lindos son viéndolo tocar (mas recientemente con mi hermano Jorge) y cantar durante reuniones familiares, rodeado de risas, amor y el sonido de nuestra tierra.

Otra de sus grandes pasiones era la pesca. En estos momentos tan difíciles, nos reconforta imaginarlo lanzando su caña en el cielo, disfrutando de unos tragos con su papá, quien también falleció mientras dormía hace ya cuatro años.

Mi hermana y yo crecimos para ser mujeres fuertes e independientes, tal y como él y mi mamá siempre quisieron. Pero Dios se lo llevó demasiado pronto, sin darle tiempo de hacer lo mismo por mis hermanos, que hoy tienen solo 18 y 13 años.

Mientras navegamos por este inmenso dolor, también enfrentamos una gran incertidumbre financiera. Mi papá era el proveedor económico principal de nuestra familia y, como muchas personas que se van antes de tiempo, no tuvo la oportunidad de dejar nada preparado.

En nombre de toda mi familia, les pido humildemente su ayuda. Ya sea que puedan donar unos cuantos dólares o simplemente compartir esta campaña, todo gesto es bienvenido. El amor y apoyo que hemos recibido hasta ahora ha sido abrumador—una prueba más de cuán profundo fue el impacto que tuvo en cada comunidad de la que formó parte.
