Father and only source of income has been on a steady decline for over three years. Numerous major invasive surgeries, removal of 78% of intestines with End Ileostomy, Renal Failure, Upper Lobectomy Right Lung. He requires assistance in all aspects of everyday life, including assistance in the bathroom(Catherization 6 times per day, daily Enema) and with dressing(inability to bend at the waist, hand and body tremors), also with eating more and more everyday. He has been diagnosed with a degenerative nerve disease as well suffers from severe Crohn's and Ulcerative colitis, which has led to severe weight loss, the inability to absorb food, he has been on pureed fruits and vegetables when the family can afford to purchase additional fruits and vegetables(another large financial hurdle) with grocery shopping, on average they can afford enough additional fruits and vegetables for a purred shake every other day for him, his doctors and nutritionalist want it to be 3 shakes per day with added supplements, one month supply of the supplements is $400.00, unfortunately the next step will be what is called TPN via a PICC line directly to his heart 8 hrs every day.
At the age of 7 was hospitalized for 16 months with 3rd and 4th degree burns over 80% of his body, he suffers from radiating severe burning pain from all his scars head to toe. He has lost all superficial feeling in his left leg due to errors during surgery, which has now started to affect the left arm and right foot,
Surgeons have stated that he is too high risk of death due to heart failure for more surgeries, this leaves 15 inches of decaying intestine attaching his rotting rectal stump to a 3 inch round hole in his abdomen they called a fistula, both of which require daily painful expensive maintenance. The original surgery to remove some of the damaged intestines and install a stoma did not work, after 5 hours of attempting to just keep him alive, due to the complexity of his internals caused by extensive internal scaring from the burns he suffered as a child, which were unknown till they opened him up, the original surgeon had to request assistance, it was so complex they called in the hospitals top surgeon, he worked for an additional 7 hours, he then put in a follow-up surgery to remove the fistula and 15 inches of decaying intestine as well remove the rectal stump and close up the rectum for 3 months later, which was rescheduled to nearly a full year later, which in turn was rescheduled numerous times due to covid 19. It has been 28 months since his initial surgery and now he is considered to high risk. He suffers daily due to this leftover surgical error, he has to flush on average 2 cups of blood, mucus, and bacterial sloughing from his fistula daily using a saline solution, as well at least as much of the same from the daily Enemas, if left to build for more than 2 days it could cause a splay in the intestine leading to septicemia and death within hours.
Neurologist has informed the family that there are no more treatment options, and they will try to reduce the pain with medication as the degenerative nerve disease continues to ravaged the entire nervous system.
The mother is the family pillar for the family, she has had to watch the love of her life and the father of her 3 sons deteriorate daily, it all became far too much for her and she was hospitalized for 10 days last December, she was discharged with no formal diagnosis, the doctor said that it was most likely a psychotic episode triggered by the stress of the fathers decline as well the financial issues, the doctors believe it to be bipolar and possible schizophrenia as such prescribed her Olanzapine.
Their 19 yr old was also diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenia, he has amazing doctors that have followed him since he was 16, they found a once a month injectable medication Paliparadone, and he is an extraordinary person who has put his entire life on hold in order to assist the family, especially for the father, he has taken over all physical aspects of everyday life, he is an excellent big brother to the youngest Leo, they are inseparable when Devin isn't doing stuff for his father and family, the oldest son is 21 and lives with his wife in Montreal, he is also an amazing young man who helps anyway he can his wife is a fledgling registered nurse, she assist in any way she can, she helps provide a bit of comfort in the turbulent mess of medical information thrown at the family.
For a full year the father was a patient at what is displayed as a family clinic, after numerous phone appointments and 3 in person visit, it came to light that the doctor was actually a cosmetics doctor for 6 years prior to covid 19, then he was closed for 4 months during the first lock down, at which point he changed his practice to be a family clinic, he was so overwhelmed each appointment the doctor would ask the father and mother what he should do, he had zero advice, they had to request blood work after the fathers kidneys started to fail and he was swelling so bad his brow protruded nearly 2 inches, the doctor proceeded to prescribed a diaretic while stating he had no clue as to what was causing the swelling. There were more of the same issues...
The fathers older brother has basically carrying both families going on 3 years now, he has done everything possible. Now he is in massive debt and unfortunately while he attempts to fix his financial situation, he will not be able to help as much
The family and friends have begun the search for more Surgeons, Gastrointestinal and urology specialists, neurologist, psychology and therapy services wherever they find a surgical team willing to take the father as a patient.
There is a high likelihood that they have found a team in Ottawa.
These are very times sensitive major hurdles for a very taxed family.
