Mohammed and his neighbors lost everything in the Atlas Mountains earthquake. The initial goal is to raise $3,850 to help Mohammed rebuild a home for this family but my end goal is to help the entire village by replacing all 10 homes for a greater goal of $38,500!
I'm passionate about this cause because during July of 2023 while trekking the Atlas Mountains, I traveled through the villages that were leveled by the recent 6.8 magnitude earthquake. In fact, my guide Mohammed’s village, Tacheddirt, had 10 families displaced. These families and their young children now live on terraces and in tents at an elevation of 7,545 feet. It was not an easy life before the earthquake and has become even harder.
Winter is fast approaching, and they desperately need help - hence the urgency of this fund-raising effort.
Another reason this is important to me is that during my hike, I succumbed to heat exhaustion. Mohammed nursed me back to health and kept me safe until I regained my strength. Being in such a remote area of the world made me realize that things would have gotten much worse very quickly if people did not help each other. These families need our help now.
One final note, at the end of Trail of Tears, the Cherokee Indians learned of the potato famine ravaging Ireland and pooled their limited resources to send help to the starving people of Ireland. Can you imagine the generosity? Amazing!
Most of us are in far better shape than the families of Tacheddirt and the Cherokees, so please consider donating to help this family rebuild their lives.
