Family Care Hostel at Kilimanjaro Cancer Centre

Tax deductible
Help us rid the world of cancer!

The Foundation for Cancer Care in Tanzania is developing the comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC). We’re in need of donations to construct the Centre’s Family Hostel; a home away from home for our cancer patients and their families. If you have a few dollars to spare, make this your good deed of the day! So many families rely on our cancer program.

What will my money help support?

The Family Hostel will offer housing to the hundreds of cancer patients yearly, traveling great distances for treatments at KCMC. In addition to 24 beds, it will include a shared kitchen, a warm and inviting common area and a children’s playground. Health educators, social workers, spiritual caregivers and lay volunteers will serve as support staff. The Family Hostel will be a source of shelter, support and hope for patients and families.

Tanzania, a country of almost 60 million people, has only three cancer centers. This means that most patients must travel hundreds of miles to receive treatment. Many patients and their families have no place to stay while at KCMC. They must sleep on the floor of the hospital or on the grounds outside. Lack of accommodations is not just inconvenient; it can be an insurmountable barrier to care.

Who will benefit from my donation?

The Cancer Care Centre at KCMC sees nearly 800 new patients and staffs 5550 visits yearly, with numbers growing monthly.  Although priority for hostel housing will be given to children and women, the Family Hostel will be available to all patients. Here are a couple of patient stories.

Sita's Story
Twice a month, Ramadhani Mtaturu leaves his wife and seven children to ride a bus more than 250 miles from his home village to a village close to KCMC. Rmadhani is seeking hope and healing for his baby girl Sita. He makes the eight-hour journey from Singida to Moshi Tanzania without hesitation.

Sita was diagnosed with Stage IIIB retinoblastoma a year ago. Doctors referred her to the Cancer Care Centre at KCMC for specialized care not available at the local hospital.

The Family Hostel will provide a nearby place for Ramadhani to stay while Sita is receiving treatments.

Winner's Story

Winner is like a beautiful butterfly, fluttering around the ward, spreading beauty wherever she goes.  Her pink sparkly dress seems to perfectly fit her personality! Winner was referred to KCMC after visiting several other medical facilities. At KCMC, a lymph node biopsy showed that she has Stage I Hodgkin lymphoma. She and her mother met with KCMC doctors and immediately began treatment consisting of chemotherapy every four weeks, for a total of six cycles.

Currently, Winner is half-way through therapy. She has good days and bad days. She stays in the hospital for 3 days during treatment. The chemo causes her to feel very tired, nauseous, and dizzy. Yet through it all, Winner has remained positive and has kept her bubbly personality!

The Family Hostel will allow Winner’s family to stay close-by to offer comfort and support during treatment.
