Familia - Student Short Film

Donation protected
Hi! I'm Charleigh Burke a film student producer! Help us fund our last short film of the year! We're based in Brighton and we're in our second year of our filmmaking course!

Our intention for this film is to shed light on the cycle of life among many families of migration and convey the raw, authentic emotions and experiences of these families. This is not a story of abandonment. We want to convey the effects of migration on family community through the lens of those left behind.

Director's Statement:

Hello! My name is Rediet and I'm extremely passionate about making this film. The concept of 'Familia' has been something I've been devloping for a very long time. I wanted to find the right narrative that will allow me to senstively encompass such a broad and universal topic for the short film format. I believe it is crucial to be able to see parts of your film in yourself as this adds an extremely authentic and real aspect to the film. Migration and its effects on family community has been a notable part of my lived experience and I aim to channel this into making a beautifully emotinal film. I hope I am able to get you to find something you can connect and relate to, and to influence you to check in on your family memebers and apprieciate your communities. Thank you for taking the timne to look into our film, any support is much apprieciated :)

Story Synopsis:

The idea is rooted in the symbolism of the white plastic monobloc chairs. They are a staple in many households around the world and have become a romanticised image of family and culture among many people. This short film will depict the conversations, games, laughter and enjoyment had whilst sat in these chairs surrounded by family and friends.

The short film will be set in a garden on a warm summers day. It’s centred around Drew, who is the epitome of a strong, maternal figure. We see her surrounded by her loved ones and we are quickly immersed in the tangible tight knit family atmospehere. The visceral visuals and universally recognisable symbols create a nostalgic and playful tone. But what happens when it's flipped on it's head? This is a journey we wish to take you on throughout this film.

Budget Breakdown:

Our main priority for our budget is our main actor. We want to hire a professional who's experience will elevate the film to a higher level. We also wish to enter this into film fesitivals such as Brighton Rocks and Cinecity, our local fesitivals.
