Our local community in East Oxford is marked by both diversity and inequality. While Oxford is often associated with privilege and academic excellence, pockets of severe deprivation exist within walking distance of the club.
Falcon Schools Rowing gives local youngsters the chance to experience the life-changing benefits of the sport we love, on their local river.
We have been able to establish a programme of activities with local schools thanks to a very generous one-off donation from one club member. However, if we are to develop that programme and secure it’s future we will need more money. For example:
- £25 pays the coaching fees for an after-school session
- £160 allows us to make a free place available on the Summer courses.
- We awarded our first bursary this year, contributing £425 to allow a local student, whose parents wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it, to join the Junior Squad for a year.
- But if we identify local youngsters of real promise as rowers, the full cost of participation is much greater: junior squad fees, race fees, and kit total nearly £1,000 a year.
Any amount you feel able to give in sponsorship will make a difference, but if we all contribute something we will be able to sustain and grow this work for the long term.
