Fairhill Community Theatre Project

Beacon Theatre Productions (BTP) brings moving stories to life that educate, inspire, and challenge audiences, explore connections between history and the present, and shine a spotlight on truths that have been diminished.

Often featuring historical characters and situations, our plays are written and performed in collaboration with local Philadelphia communities. A truly impactful experience, our goal is to engage community members in the arts and unearth new talent.

Our upcoming “Fairhill Project” unites residents, students, community organizations, local artists, and professional theater makers to create an interdisciplinary performance piece about Philadelphia’s Fairhill neighborhood.

Though the Fairhill community has the highest poverty rate in Philadelphia, it is vibrant and full of arts and culture.

For the Fairhill Project, we built on our previous work in the community to create a performing art/visual art collaboration piece that uplifts the voices of the community directly. In partnership with the Providence Center, Historic Fair Hill, and Fairhill Neighbors, we conducted neighborhood tours, interviewed residents, and held story circles. Common threads appeared, including respect for generational wisdom, challenges and triumphs in school, and struggles with discrimination, poverty, and drug use. Our Lead Artists have since set about the work of defining and refining the message and crafting it into a theatrical piece with the community’s own voice, and interweaving it with the work of local artists. The piece will be performed by community members in tandem with more experienced performers and the visual, scenic, and lobby art installations of community artists.
Our performances are scheduled for August of 2021, outdoors, at neighborhood arts center Taller Puertorriqueño. But there is still much work to be done.

We need your help to get all the way there. We would love to have you be a part of this journey!
