On July 8, 2023, my husband and my children’s father, Antwan Lindsey, was killed by Columbus police. Since then, my family and I have been trying to move forward while living with grief, unanswered questions, and the financial strain that followed.
I have worked all my life, and before this conviction I had never been unable to find a job. I have continued doing everything I can to find employment and rebuild stability for my household. The case moved forward in August 2026, and the conviction was finalized at the end of September 2026. Since then, passing background checks has become a major barrier to getting hired. I was even turned down for an Amazon warehouse position after my background check, despite the fact that it is considered felony friendly. I firmly maintain that I did not steal anything, but this conviction is now affecting my ability to find work, pay my bills, and keep rebuilding for my family.
I am actively looking and interviewing, and I already have interviews set up for next week. But each time a background check comes back, I am denied. I also cannot do DoorDash or Amazon Flex because I cannot pass those background checks either. This has left me in a position I never imagined, where I am doing everything I can to work and still cannot get through the hiring process.
Right now, my family is facing an immediate crisis. My electricity will be shut off on October 9, and I need $980 to prevent that shutoff. My landlord is delivering a 3-day eviction notice tomorrow because I am two months behind on rent, with $2,700 owed. I have been trying to hold my household together with almost nothing left. I had to choose between buying lunch meat and bread for my children or holding onto the little money I had. I chose to get my kids something to eat, and I ate crackers and peanut butter so they could have food.
I tried to send my landlord $175, but he sent it back and said he could not accept it because my rent is getting later every month and it is putting him in a bind. I understand that, but the truth is that I do not have the income to survive anymore while I keep getting denied work after background checks. I am also trying to help my son, who has Asperger autism, learn how to work and navigate society so that he can build independence and not have to depend on me if something happens.
I do not have a support system or people I can turn to right now, which is why I am asking for help. This fundraiser will help me cover rent, electricity, gas, food, and other household bills while I continue searching for work. Because these needs are ongoing, recurring donations would provide steady support that helps me keep up with housing, utilities, and basic needs while I try to regain stability. One-time donations would also make a real difference right now.
If you are able to help, please consider donating or sharing my fundraiser. Your support would mean a great deal to me and my children as we try to stay housed, keep the lights on, and make it through this devastating time.
