Facial trauma needs reconstruction
I know that last year was incredibly difficult and wiped the smile from many of our faces. 2020 literally took mine in December. I had a fall and ended up in the ER at Kaiser. I suffered a concussion, fractured maxilla (upper jaw) in two places, and 7 broken and displaced teeth which are currently wired together. Let me explain why this is my worst nightmare. At 16 years of age I became fascinated with dentistry. I dedicated 30 years of my life to helping others improve their smiles. I am a medically retired registered dental hygienist now on disability due to severe back issues from the repetitive movement and adrenal problems. The past year I have been under the care of an endocrinologist for an adrenal disorder. The medical portion of my accident was fully covered by Kaiser. The reconstructive/restorative portion is not. I have Blue Shield HMO dental insurance, however, they have an “accident clause” and denied everything. I have now been seen by 2 general dentists, 2 oral surgeons, a periodontist, and UCLA School of Dentistry. Unfortunately all of the bone on the front side of my teeth has been damaged and none of the teeth or bone is salvageable. I am looking at multiple surgical extractions and extensive bone grafting. After several months of healing the restorative/tooth replacement work can begin. I have several teeth that are fractured below the gum line and 3 starting to abscess. They are not wired in their original position so it is affecting my bite and ability to chew. As you can imagine this is terribly uncomfortable at best. Asking for help isn’t easy especially in these times. If you are able to support me in any capacity in my time of need it would be greatly appreciated. If not, simply sharing would mean just as much to me. Thank you for helping me smile again...
