Face Shields for Healthcare Providers in the DMV

The Mission

Our healthcare workers and first responders are in dire need of personal protective equipment (PPE).  Using open-source designs and relying on donations and volunteers, we are manufacturing, assembling, coordinating and delivering face shields to healthcare workers in the DMV area.

Our Goal is to raise $15,000 to create 9,000 face shields.

Why Face Shields?

·      Face shields actively slow down the spread of infection among frontline workers
·      They are inexpensive to produce in large quantities
·      They extend the shelf life of masks, keeping them usable for longer
·      They act as a shield against coughs and sneezes from close proximity work
·     They can be used without masks as a barrier of protection

The Design

The Open Source Face Shield  is a low cost, medical face shield designed to be quickly made using almost any flat material fabrication equipment (laser cutters, rule dies, drag knife, CNC punch, etc.), or even scissors and an office hole punch from any clear flexible material.

It requires no hardware or 3D printed parts, just two pieces of flexible clear plastic and an elastic band.

The Process

We are working in collaboration with local businesses with laser cutting technology and volunteers who are dedicating time to manufacture, assemble, coordinate and deliver face shields to healthcare providers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We are using GetUsPPE’s centralized platform to verify requests and deliver PPEs where most needed.

Given social distancing requirements, here’s what the process looks like:

·      We purchase the materials and ship them directly to the workshops.
·      The workshops cut out the parts and place them in a designated area for pick up.
·      The parts are delivered to volunteers to be assemble into face shields.
·      The  face shields are collected from a designated area and delivered to healthcare organizations in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

The Funds
The funds are used to manufacture and ship the face shields.

Other Ways to Help
