Courtney Bibb is a man on a mission — on 20 missions, to be exact.
On Oct. 1, Bibb set out from his home in the New York City borough of the Bronx, with the goal of bicycling across the United States, stopping and volunteering at 20 nonprofits along the way.
“I felt like I was being pushed toward a purpose,” he said. “I started training, doing 40 miles on a stationary bike in the morning, going over the details of the trip in the afternoon, and going back to the gym at night.”
As soon as he was comfortably able to go 80 miles on the bike, he knew it was time to start his journey. His departure came with little fanfare — he told only a few close friends and family members about his plan. He didn’t go to any companies for sponsorship or promotion. He paid for the bicycle he bought just three weeks before he left.
Support for charities:
Bibb has been keeping track of his adventures and keeping in contact with his family and friends through his Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr page. He’s hesitant to take praise for his actions, but the site has drawn the attention of friends he’s met along the way, many of whom want to help his cause.
He started a Go Fund Me account:
C.harity A.ction B.enefits, to raise money for the places he visits. Bibb hopes to reach $20,000, or $1,000 for each charity, by the time he arrives at his final destination, Los Angeles, in March or April.
More than money, Bibb wants to raise awareness for the nonprofits he’s serving. He wants to take stories of the places he’s been and the people he’s met back home to New York, to inspire the next generation to find ways to help.
“I’m not trying to garner any type of fame, because after I pass on, these charities will still be around. They will live on and keep doing what they’re supposed to be doing. That’s what I want people to know about.”...
