My name is Lisa Del Chiaro, Matt Jones' fiancee. I am writing to you on Matt's behalf.
First, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Jamie Smith for creating this GoFundMe. Matt and I both express our deepest gratitude to you for doing this.
Second, I want to provide you with more context. Over the past three years, Matt's health has been declining steadily. He has had numerous surgeries with no success as a result of being misdiagnosed several times. Over the Christmas break this year, he received a diagnosis of a very rare cancer: Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. Matt's oncology team informed us that he will have to do approximately 44 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, with a possibility of surgery if chemotherapy and radiation is not successful. All of this in the next year. We are reeling from this diagnosis and its implications.
Third, is the very humble and uncomfortable 'ask.' Matt has been unable to work since April 2024 as a result of the ups and downs with his health, and he will continue to be off work for at least a year as he soon begins treatment. During these three years, the financial burden has been significant with lost wages, unexpected medical costs (our healthcare is not free in so many ways), and day to day expenses. To support Matt's recovery and healing, we are reaching out to the community for financial support so Matt and his loved ones can be somewhat relieved from the worries of making ends meet during an already incredibly difficult time. We do indeed recognize the instability of the current economic climate and its impact on you. Of course, we fully understand if you are unable to donate. In any case, sharing this post would also mean the world to us!
And finally a personal sentiment. Those of you who know Matt, know he is a beautiful human with a heart of gold! As Matt's fiancee, I have had the honour to be an integral part of Matt's life for over 15 years. Matt has been there for me during the best and most difficult moments through my life. While this journey has been heartbreaking, it is an absolute privilege to be present to support a loved one during their most vulnerable time. We live in a mixed set of feelings (fear, disbelief, compassion, acceptance, and so much hope) and yet, I am grateful and know that this experience will provide a renewed sense of strength and growth as we proceed.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
