Alexander Swiftwater McCarty Memorial Scholarship

Tax deductible
Alexander Swiftwater McCarty, was a qʷidiččaʔa·tx̌ master indigenous woodcarver, painter, printmaker and teacher who left a legacy beyond measure at Evergreen State College, various schools across the state of Washington, tribal communities and beyond. After his unexpected passing from a rare form of cancer on March 15, 2024, our family wanted to create a scholarship in his name to support students furthering their education in honor of Alex.

Alex earned his Bachelor in Visual Arts in 2000 and a Master in Teaching degree in 2002 from Evergreen where he went on to become a professor, teaching woodcarving and printmaking in the Native American and Indigenous Studies Programs. He was Forever Green from there on, supporting the next generation's path to higher learning and sharing his vast knowledge with students, colleagues, and the community.

As a beloved member of the Makah Tribe, Alex’s approach to traditional art was “Learn it with care, preserve it with beauty, and pass it on."

We would like to continue supporting students at Evergreen State College carry on the important work he was doing.

Please join us in making this dream a reality by making a donation to the Alexander Swiftwater McCarty Memorial Scholarship to honor his life and legacy.

We have set a starting goal of $9,000, the cost of a years tuition at Evergreen to support a student in their journey to learn it with care, preserve it with beauty, and pass it on.

Thank you
