My grandson Jonah has been in the hospital since Valentine's day, first at the children's hospital in Ann Arbor for a month and now in Grand Rapids. He has a rare metabolic condition that causes him to struggle with gaining weight, digesting fat, absorbing certain electrolytes, and maintaining his blood sugar. He recently had surgery to place a tube in his stomach to assist in administering meds, meeting his calorie goals, and running a continuous feed to maintain his blood sugar levels.

My daughter Susan has been by his side in the hospital this whole time. She is on an unpaid leave from work after she quickly burned through her available paid time off. Once he's discharged, he will still have increased needs that will keep Susan from returning to work full time (at least for now).
