Mum, where is Dad?

Jonathan Korenof with Asher (left) Eden (middle)

Asher and his sister, four year old Eden were waiting for their dad, Jonathan to pick them both up for their weekly outing, last Sunday. Unfortunately, he didn't turn up. Hours later, Asher with tears in his eyes, asked Mum, where's Dad?".

I am writing this letter on behalf of my daughter Selina Korenhof, who is absolutely distraught from the tragic news she received yesterday morning. Police arrived at 6am to tell her that Jonathan Korenhof (29), the father of their two children; Son, Asher (5) and Daughter, Eden (4) had died suddenly in his sleep. He was only 29 years of age. An aspiring young man who had a beautiful heart, softly spoken and a passion to do well in life.

The news has devastated both his family and ours and it couldn't have come at a worse time. Words cannot begin to describe the world of pain his Mum and Dad, Olepa and Rudie Korenhof and their (3) daughters, all very close, must be feeling right now. What do you say to a mother, who has just lost her only son? How do you comfort a grieving father who longs to spend more time with his son? Harder still, how do you explain to your children that Daddy won’t be coming back, at all?

Without a doubt, Jonathan loved his children very much and was committed to sharing the responsibilities of parenthood with Selina. My heart is broken. I loved him like he was my own son and he always called me Dad. I will miss him dearly...

Jonathan's family have already begun the gruelling trip to take him back to his hometown in Whakatane, New Zealand where he will be laid to rest.

As well as the emotional burden that has impacted both families, this also places a huge financial burden on Selina to attend the funeral, especially being so close to Christmas. The cost of return flights to New Zealand including the internal connecting, return flights from Auckland to Whakatane and time off work will be horrendously high and to be honest, we are just not in any position to manage this expense and so for me personally, this is the hard part.

We need your help!!! Please, if anyone who can see and understand the dilemma my daughter is facing, we would be so grateful for any contribution or donation to help reduce the financial burden to get Selina, Asher and Eden on a return flight from Melbourne to Auckland, New Zealand plus the connecting flights from Auckland to Whakatane return. Compassionate travel also only covers domestic only flights

Thank you for taking the time to read my request this far.

If you are unable to contribute to our urgent cause, perhaps you might know someone who can. We would be so grateful if you could pass this on.

Finally, on behalf of both the Korenhof and Eriwata families, thank you for your support in advance.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please don't hesitate to call me direct on

Many Thanks

Richard Eriwata (Selina's Dad)
