Hi everyone, I was embarrassed to reach out for the longest time because I hate being a bother to anyone. But the truth is I need help. I’ve been in and out of the hospital for the last year due to having a broken down wheelchair. I can’t use the wheelchair that I currently have as much because that’s what put me in the hospital in the first place.
I was in a car accident when I was 6 years old that left me paralyzed from the waist down and put me in a wheelchair. As a kid going to physical therapy I eventually learned to walk on a walker and then on forearm crutches. I walked on crutches for most of elementary school and all of middle school and high school.
After I graduated from high school I went to college in the Los Angeles area where I lived on campus away from home. One day during my second year, I left my apartment to go to the gym, which was about 2 miles away. I didn’t drive back then so I headed to the gym in my wheelchair. I made it there successfully, worked out, did my thing, and after about an hour made my trek back home. When I finally made it back and was crossing the crosswalk in my wheelchair, a car ran a red light and hit me at 40 mph. I flew 20 feet in the air and was unconscious for about 45 minutes. I ended up fracturing my hip from that accident and was no longer able to walk on crutches.
I was flown to LA County Medical Center by a helicopter and after a week in the hospital I decided to not get surgery because of issues the hospital was having with accepting my insurance. After taking a short leave of absence to recover, I returned to school.
I am now 28 years old and have been in and out of the hospital for pretty much my whole life. Recently I was hospitalized again due to a pressure sore that got infected from sitting in my wheelchair for long periods of time without relieving pressure from my lower body.
Due to my continuous visits to the hospital, I have also been in and out of various colleges for almost the last decade and I am now finally about to enter my last year and finally graduate!
The reason I am fundraising this money is so that I can get a new customized wheelchair that will accommodate my needs so I no longer have to go back to the hospital.
It took me a little more than a decade, but I’m almost at the finish line. Please help me get a new wheelchair and help me make my dreams come true of finally graduating (:
