At the Classic Horse Show on July 11th of this year, Devereaux Sporthorses was off to a great start taking 1st & 2nd in the Low Hunter Under Saddle. Dev Branham went in for the warm up over fences class on Rhett's Bluff. They landed well over the first fence, but then Brig hopped through the flying change throwing everything off balance. When he slipped there was no recovering and he fell on top of Dev. It was a hard landing, but luckily we all knew Dev was conscious from his loud expletive upon impact. We also knew he must be really hurt. He immediately complained about his eye and it swelled up to the point of being shut. Tough guy that he is, Dev got an ice pack and coached his student through the rest of the division. Afterwards, he went to the ER to get everything checked out. X-rays showed a fracture below his eye and they recommended he follow up with an ENT Doctor. Dev powered through Sunday riding two and coaching three. When he went to the ENT on Monday, they referred him to an Opthamologist. The diagnosis was not good. The fracture would need to be removed and replaced with artificial material. Surgery was outpatient, but Dev would not be allowed to ride for four weeks. The dream of Pre-Green Incentive Finals in Kentucky was dead, but at least Dev would be ok. Surgery went well, but the fracture had nicked an artery and it needed to be caurterized. Thank God for Dev's dilligent follow up as it could have severed at any time. On the road to recovery and back teaching, all seemed to be going well. Until almost a week later, Dev's eye started bleeding profusely. The artery repair had not held and he needed to go in for a second emergency surgery. The Doctor feels sure the artery will hold this time, but he is taking no chances and Dev is on a mandated 10 day rest. No strenuous activity, like barn chores or even teaching. Dev would never ask for help, but the medical copays and no viable means of income would be a strain for anyone, let alone a one man show. Let's all chip in and help give Dev some help towards medical bills and missed training opportunities!
