Our dad Janusz Dobrowolski was and is a great man. He played soccer in the Polish national Junior team up to the age of 20, representing Poland at the World Cup in Mexico in 1983 winning the bronze medal. His passion for the sport continued after we immigrated to Calgary in 1991 where he actively played soccer and was the coach of the Polish soccer team “White Eagles’.

Family and soccer was his whole life until the accident that occurred on July 18, 2016. Falling from the roof onto the concrete driveway, he suffered brain and spinal cord injuries . He was lucky that he even survived especially since he was revived four times. He underwent serious spine surgery, was three weeks in a coma, struggled for life to recover his memory, pneumonia infections -these were the things he had to fight through - but he did not give up and survived this nightmare. Unfortunately the result was paralyzation from the waist down.

His two-year struggle for recovery continues and brings everyday effects a step forward. During this time teammates and friends helped adapt our parents home to everyday life in a wheelchair. A few used machines were installed to assist in the daily exercises and workouts which help improve muscle strength and regain nerve stimulation. All of this however is not enough; doctors in Poland and Canada told him that his only hope is surgery: Lominectomy with injection of stem cells in damaged areas. The best clinic that performs this operation is in Thailand in Bangkok. Unique Access Medical have an innovative surgery method + the best available in the world stem cells. This operation improves motor function, sensory function, improves bowel and bladder control, better balance and coordination, there is a chance that he will be able to get up and start walking; all of which is his deepest dream.

Our parents made contact with the clinic and In October he received a positive answer that he qualified for the surgery. Great news however there are huge costs involved and the lack of financial means prevents him from taking a further fight for recovery.

Our dad is a type of warrior, an amazing, cheerful man, with a positive attitude and the faith that it will be better. His hard workouts give results including more feeling in his legs which bring a glimmer of light in what seems a dark tunnel. There is no one that deserves this surgery more than him. He is a true inspiration considering all the challenges he has had to face in the last few years. Doctors only gave him a 5% chance that he will walk again, but a chance is all that he needs.

With your support we hope to raise money for this operation in Bangkok, which would pay for the surgery and 12 day stay at their clinic. The cost is $55,000 CAD which for my family is an astronomical sum, that they cannot afford. I hope you can understand what it means for a former athlete who is bound to a wheelchair to get his “Big Chance” through this operation. Helping one person might not change the world but it could change the world for that one person.
