Steve is a long time Houston resident, who had a sudden onset of a severe medical condition on July 17th and is in the intensive care uint of a Vancouver hospital.
Steve worked at Houston Forest Products lumber mill for over 25 years and lost his job (and benefits) when the mill closed in the spring of 2014. He decided to dedicate his time to the BC Ambulance Service in Houston, where he has been a Primary Care Paramedic for over 30 years. Working for the Ambulance Service as his only income came with some challenges: a lower income and reduced benefits. While part time paramedics do receive dental and extended health coverage; they do not receive any sick leave and no short or long term disability pay. As such, Steve is left with no income or benefits while he recovers in ICU. His significant other has also taken a leave from her job to travel to Vancouver to be at his bedside, leaving her without an income as well.
We are hoping to raise enough money to help cover living costs for the next two to three months while the health professionals work on getting Steve better and one step closer to being returned home.
