Sophies Journey

Our beautiful daughter Sophie is currently in a Children's Mental Health hospital in Sevenoaks Kent as an informal patient. The hospital that Sophie is in can only treat her until she turns 18 years old.
Sophie turned 18 on the 15th June this year, after being on the ward for several weeks.
Sophie is suffering from severe depression and tried to take her own life in March this year.
I thank the lord every day that she is still here and that she was brave enough to tell us what she had done and ask for help.
While being in hospital Sophie was started on an anti-depressant and recommended CBT Therapy to start immediately.
After 5 weeks it was clear that the Anti Depressant wasnt the right one for Sophie, so we asked if it could be changed or another added in , as by this point Sophie was suffering from severe Anxiety also.
Sophie had also not started any therapy .
This was not due to Covid as the therapist was still seeing other patients.
We were told that no medication would be changed and no therapy would be given to Sophie as she had now turned 18 ! and that this was something that an adult ward would sort out.
Sophie has lost to date from when she was admitted over 4kgs in weight due to anxiety preventing her from eating, she is getting painfully thin .
A couple of days after Sophie turned 18 and with less than 24 hours notice we were told that Sophie was moving to an adult ward in Maidstone !
No transition period
No treatment plan
And in the middle of a Pandemic !
To say Sophie was petrified is an understatement , her BP rose as did her heart rate, and all Sophie was advised to do was take a sedative , like an animal !
We visited the Adult hospital and in less than 3 minutes Sophie was attacked with a bottle ,this was while 2 nurses and myself were present , which resulted in Sophie having a huge anxiety attack.
They do not offer any therapy that Sophie so desperately needs.
Sophie was taken back to her current Hospital and we felt no choice but to turn the Adult Hospital down.
I managed to start a campaign which involved the Hospital Managers, the head of CHAMS , the bed allocation team and Tracey Crouch MP and after a lengthy process we were told that they would let Sophie stay to finish her treatment.
To say we were elated is an understatement!!
I then received a phone call from the hospital to say they now wanted Sophie to be assessed for sectioning ? Her behaviour had not changed , Sophie was not or ever had been hostile or aggressive or ever refused medication. She had not tried to self harm while in hospital , so why the sudden need for a sectioning assessment ?
Even the independent Dr that was assessing Sophie could not fathom out while he had been called out.
Sophie was not sectioned.
We then learnt that if Sophie had been sectioned she would of been removed from the Hospital where she is staying with immediate effect , coincidence , I think not !
Jump forward to this week and i have been called to a meeting where I thought Sophie's medication was finally being reviewed, however this was not the case !
In Fact I was told Sophie was being made to leave on the 13th July and it was down to me to sort where she was going to be discharged to.
I asked why this was the case as we had been told Sophie could continue and finish her treatment where she was .
Apparently now her treatment plan has changed ! and the clause for Sophie to finish treatment where she is , is that her treatment plan didn't change !
I can let you all know the only thing that changed on Sophie's treatment plan was the date !
How can they do this to her?
Sophie has never been to a pub , taken drugs or lived an outward lifestyle.
We know that Sophie being transferred to an adult ward would have massive
safe- guarding issues and truly believe Sophie would be in danger.
Sophie may be 18 and classed legally as an adult , but as most of us would agree
you don't morph into an adult overnight, and that turning 18 is a hard enough period without adding mental health issues in to the mix.
Sophie is a bright intelligent beautiful young lady , who has an amazing future ahead of her , she has excelled in her GCSEs and is predicted A* grades in her A levels. She wanted to go to university and join the police.
She is so so loved by her family and especially by her younger sister who is 12 who is pining for her desperately, She even asked to postpone her birthday until she has her sister back.
Sophie cares so much about everyone she meets and everything she does .
It is truly heartbreaking as a fellow human and her mum to watch her be refused therapy , refused the right medication and watch her fade in front of my very eyes.
At the moment she is sitting in a hospital with no help , unable to eat due to anxiety and waiting to be evicted Monday morning , I feel helpless im her mum im meant to fix things for her .
I've found a hospital that is local that can take Sophie and will reduce the medication she is on and then start a new one while also finding a medication for her anxiety. They will also start immediate therapy.
The only thing I cant do is fund it which is heart breaking
I cant afford to save my daughters life !
My contract wasnt renewed by Boots the chemist medication delivery service after Sophie was admitted, as they said that I couldn't fulfill my 30 hours a week contracted hours

due to Hospital visits and Hospital appointments
They anticipate Sophie would need up to 12 weeks max, of hospital treatment before she would be stable enough to return home and finish treatment in the community.
Sophie's life saving treatment would be £30,000 in total , i'm not expecting to get even near that amount if any at all , but I can't give up , im her mum , and sophie needs to be here ,alive and happy to live the great life that is ahead of her.
If you have a child of a similar age look at them and look at the things they are looking forward to , Sophie just wants to be well.
Mental Health is an awful disease that can strike anyone at anytime ,regardless of income and life style etc, and I promise you I will never give up the fight for adolescent Mental Health Treatment .
In the meantime please please from one human , one parent to another please help me get the treatment my daughter so desperately needs to live .
The pictures above are of Sophie in happier times , If you was to see Sophie now you simply wouldn't recognise her .
Thankyou x
