Our beloved 1 year old German Shepherd... How our story starts...

After losing our last dog Diesel over 10 years ago, we were bereft and grief stricken for what seemed forever, as all dog owners/lovers know, losing your shadow, sidekick, partner in crime, four legged friend, fur baby, and member of the family is heartbreaking and something we have never forgotten but have learnt to cope with, and Diesels memory carries on with us every day.

Ten years on..and our lifestyle and circumstances work wise have altered so we thought now was the time to welcome another dog into our lives who would be loved and cared for as much Diesel.

Along came Boomer, our first meeting with him was joyful, and we both knew he was the dog for us, who could fill the void we had been feeling.

We were so excited to welcome Boomer into our home, he was a small bundle of fluff, joy and mischief, as all new pups are, but we soon settled into the routine and having a dog in our home again felt complete.

By the time Boomer was 6 months old we had all adjusted and my husband and Boomer had formed a really strong bond, and I already clearly love him, with his sticky up ears, his huge loving eyes and his lion-like mane fur, what's not to love. He is just so handsome!! Along with all of that comes his little quirks, loving times, playfulness, and of course the testing moments of training a pup! We love him dearly and in such a short time he has enriched our lives, we have purpose again with the unconditional love a dog gives. We are a family and Boomer goes everywhere we do.

In March, Boomer developed a slight limp and skip when out walking and playing, at first we as most owners rested him up for a few days thinking he had just overdone it a little with his bounding energy. We consulted his vet a few days later as he was still limping and lethargic. He was given painkillers but after x-rays and blood work done it was found he was suffering with severe hip dysplasia (a genetic birth defect). On hearing this news our hearts sank. He is now 9 months and we have tapered his walks and exercise down to allow for his condition and he has been enlisted in a course of hydrotherapy to see if this helps, his pressure tests have shown he will most definitely need both hips replacing once he is fully grown. His insurance will cover some of the costs for the surgery, but it is costly, we both work but are unable to meet his needs financially for both hips replacing even with our life savings. If Boomer doesn't get the surgery he needs next year to replace his hips and give him a better quality of life for him to enjoy a happy life, as he is already limited to 5-10 minutes walk a day, which is impacting on his already learnt social skills.. the joys of finally of having another dog in our lives is in the balance as his future is uncertain.
