F-5 Challenge 2019 Bonneville Speedweek

我々F-5 Spirits Racing Teamは、ロサンゼルスと日本各地に散らばったメンバーが手弁当で集まったチームで、ユタ州ボンネビル・ソルト・フラッツで毎年8月に行われる、ボンネビル・スピードウィークに2014年から参加しています。

We are the F-5 Spirits Racing Team, a team based in Los Angeles with members from LA and Japan. We  have participated in this event since 2014.

昨年は、1マイル区間の平均時速280キロを達成すことができました。
これは、みなさんのサポートとゲストとしてドライブしてくれた宮城 光さんのサジェッション、頑張ったチームメンバーのお陰です。

今年は、Mooncraftの由良拓也さんの指導を得て、720 Rotary Miataの空力面を改良し、時速300キロを目指します。

Last year, thanks to the help from our supporters, our team members' efforts and suggestions from our guest driver Mr. Miyagi, we  reached a top speed of 174.756 mph.

This year we evolve the aerodynamics of our 720 Rotary Miata with the guidance of Mr. Takuya  Yura Moocraft Japan our goal is to hit a top speed of 300km/h (186mph).

ボンネビル・スピード・ウィークは、世界中から500台以上の車やオートバイが塩の平原に集まりスピード記録に挑む、今年で71回目を迎えるアメリカン・クラシック・イベントです。

Every August, Bonneville Speed ​​Week takes place on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah. This place is a mecca of racing enthusiasts, and every year more than 500 cars and motorcycles gather from all over the world to challenge speed records. It's a classic American event which celebrates its 71st anniversary this year.


チームの首謀者はドライバーでもあるSam Okamotoで、スピードに潜む謎を解き明かして、それを多くの皆さんとシェアできたらと思ってチャレンジしています。 
我々は、最終の到達目標を時速500キロに設定しており、チーム名も竜巻の風速を示す藤田スピードで時速500キロを意味するF-5としました。

The F-5 Spirits Team Leader is  driver Sam Okamoto. His lifelong experience and passion for speed led him to Bonneville. “I hope to unlock the hidden mysteries of speed by experiencing faster speeds,  and I wish to share it with many people.” Our ultimate goal is 500kph (312mph), which is how the team got its name F-5, which means the speed of tornado at the Fujita speed of 500kph.

720 Rotary Miataは、ペリフェラルポートに改良した13Bロータリーエンジンを積んだマシーンで、F/GMS (2~3リッターエンジンの改造スポーツカークラス) に出場しています。
これまでの記録は時速281.24キロです。
我々が参加しているF/GMSクラス(2~3リッターの自然吸気ガソリンエンジンの改造スポーツカークラス)の記録は時速322キロで、これ破るのが来年の目標です。

At our current preparation stage, we are participating in the F/GMS class (modified sports cars of 2 to 3 liter engines) build from a Mazda Miata loaded with a 13B rotary engine. Our record so far is 175mph, and the target this year is 184mph.
The F/GMS Class record is 200.240mph and this is our goal for next year.

We will be documenting the car modification process to achieve our goal on our "Way to F-5 Bonneville Challenge" Facebook page.

時速300キロは新幹線かスーパーカーに乗れば誰でも体験出来るスピードですが、自分達のマシーンで標高1300メートルのボンネビルの塩の上でとなると、これが一筋縄では行きません。
それぞれの参加者が自分の記録にチャレンジするために、空気抵抗を減らしたりエンジンパワーを上げるなど、少しでも速く走るために知恵を絞ってマシーンを仕立てて集まって来るのが、スピード・ウィークなのです。
このイベントは競走ではないので、とてもピースフルな雰囲気です。

186mph is a speed that anyone can experience, if you ride in a Shinkansen bullet train or supercar. However, when it comes to building your own car, it takes much effort and engineering to increase the maximum speed even 1mph, such as decreasing air resistance and increasing engine power. It takes a lot of work these improvements. People who build machines with these kinds of thoughts and efforts gather in Bonneville from all over the world. Speed ​​Week is actually a peaceful atmosphere because it is not a competition -- each participant is only competing against themselves and their own personal record.
