A Mother, A Legacy, and a Loss

My mother, Joan Swaby, is 76 years old and has spent her entire life giving back to her patients as a CNA, her family , her church, her community in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica. She built a home in the early 1990s on land that has been in our family since the early 1900s. This land isn’t just property — it’s our family’s legacy, passed from generation to generation, a piece of Jamaica that holds our roots and our memories.

Today, that home is decimated.

What once stood as a symbol of strength and family love has been reduced to rubble. Walls are collapsing, the roof has caved in, and what remains is unsafe and unlivable.

When I walked through the rooms of my mother’s home — the same rooms where she raised us, cooked, prayed, and laughed — I was met with silence and devastation. She has lost everything.

Joan now faces the unimaginable at 76: starting over with nothing.

She needs help to demolish the remains and rebuild a safe, simple home on the same land her family has cherished for nearly a century.

We have video footage and photos that show the heartbreaking condition of the house — not to exploit pain, but to show truth.
