On September 22, Kelly texted me asking me to come home early from an out of town meeting because she was in a tremendous amount of pain. It was something she'd never done before so I knew it must be serious. The next day she had an ultrasound early in the morning followed by CT scans in the evenin. The scans revealed a large ovarian mass and markers in the liver and colon indicating the possibilty of cancer. The next Monday she had a colonoscopy and a sample from a mass in the colon proved cancerous after biopsy.
That next Thursday (October 1st) we began our journey at Baylor/St. Lukes in the Houston Medical Center. Wow - what a team to have walk with you through all of this. On their advice we checked into St. Lukes and began a series of tests and mini procedures culminating in Kelly's first round of chemo - which went pretty well, I might add.
Kelly has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Adenocarcinoma. It's stage 4 because we know that it has metastasized to the liver in the form of seven spots. We still don't have a lot of answers on the ovarian mass that got this whole thing started. We know it's big and it's too unstable to biopsy - so for now treatment is assuming that it came from the colorectal mass.
Over the next 11 weeks, Kelly will have 5 more rounds of chemo and we also will be meeting with the team at Baylor to review progress of the chemo and some pending test results that were performed on the cancer cells.
Through it all, we've watched how God has prepared us for this season and so we can rest in Him knowing that He has seen it from the beginning. I would be writing a book if I tried and tell you all the things that led up to this moment - it really is humbling and mind-blowing at the same time and my faith has grown watching it all.
Our biggest need is prayer. A lot of you have asked me "what can I do?" Pray! The truth is, we truly need a miracle and through it all, we know that God is at work one for Kelly. We have set up this fund to help with any of the costs that come with this new journey in our life. And, while I hope this part of the journey is a short one, I am reminded that we don't get to choose the route but to trust the One who makes the route knowing that He can be trusted.
"I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
